The Play "My Name Is Rachel Corrie" is now set for Saturday January 26th at the Grace Methodist Church in Des Moines with two performances. One at 2PM and one at 7:30PM. The play is about the young American peace activist who was, in 2003, working in the Rafah area of the Gaza Strip. Her death was the result of her effort to stop an Israeli bulldozer which was preparing to demolish a Palestinian home in Rafah.  The play, produced by Countdown To Zero of Denver, Colorado, is directed by Brian Freeland and the performer is Julie Rada.  The company has been performing in the Denver area since September and is now taking the play on the road. Des Moines will be an early stop on the tour.

The play deals with Rachel as an individual growing up in Olympia, Washington, her development and what lead her into her role as a peace activist. It follows her into Rafah to the fateful day of her death. There is a natural connection between the play and Iowa.  Rachel's parents, Craig and Cindy Corrie met at Drake University where they were both students. Craig was born and raised in Des Moines. His mother still lives here. They have appeared twice in Des Moines, sponsored by the American Friends Service Committee on both occasions, to tell the story of their attempts to get both the Israeli government and the US government to investigate the tragedy. Both have refused, leaving the investigation to the Israeli army which was responsible for Rachel's death.
