      Standing Committees

v     Personal Care/Food Panty – Kathy was introduced as the new chair for Food Pantry.  She would like to do some displays, stickers for calendars along with continuing to use Bulletins, announcements to promote Food Panty 

 

v     Coffee project – No report.

 

v     Homeless Meals – No Report.

 

v     St. Theresa House – Thank you to those who worked at St Theresa House and completed all the fall yard work.

 

v     DMARC News –  No report

 

v     Catholic Charities – Catholic Charities Week is Nov 26th through Dec 3rd.

Activities will include 2 Open Houses, Lunch & Learns and a Bare Essential Collection. “No Room at the Inn” will be held Dec 3rd, 2006.  This project helps to promote awareness of homelessness.  Volunteers are needed.

v     Angel Tree – Barb & Aurora reported that we will have about 75 to 80 children to serve through the Prison Ministry Angel Tree Project.  Angel tags will be available on the trees at Masses Dec 2nd -3rd.  Gifts will need to be brought to Masses Dec 9th - 10th.  Volunteers are needed to deliver packages to families.

 

v     Work of Human Hands – See St Theresa Bazaar Information.

v     AMOS – John   reported that the “AMOS Fall Accountability Session” held   October 22nd went very well.   About 300 people were in attendance and much was learned.

 

      Other News and Volunteer Opportunities

v     St Theresa Annual Christmas Bazaar – Dec 2nd Social Concerns will share a booth with Richard Flamer from the Chiapas Project.  Don’t forget to stop by to purchase fair trade coffee, chocolates and advent calendars along with your Work of Human Hands catalog order.  Richard will have photos and crafts from the Chiapas area.

 

v     Reggie’s Sleep Out – This event is Friday, November 10th.  Anita, along with other members of Just Faith, is participating.

 

v     Exploring Darfur – Learn more about the Darfur region of the Sudan Nov 12th, 6:30 – 8:30 PM @ St James Lutheran Church(5665 Merle Hay Rd. Johnston) 

 

v     DMACSAC Meeting–(Des Moines Area Coalition of Social Action Committees)

Jos Linn will be speaking about RESULTS (a nonprofit, grassroots advocacy organization, committed to creating the political will to and hunger and the worst aspect of poverty) Nov 16th, 7-9 PM at St Augustin’s Church.

 

v     Social Concerns Morning of Reflection/Faith Sharing – Please RSVP to Anne if you are planning to attend Saturday, November 18th, 9-11 AM.  We will gather in the Church Hall or East Meeting Room.

 

v     Environment and the Church – Sacred Heart Church will host “Climate Change, Energy and Justice: a Catholic Approach, November 30th @ 6:45 PM.  Call the Diocese of DM to register @ 237-5041

 

v     Amanda the Panda – Margaret reported that Amanda the Panda is in great need of help wrapping a huge # of Christmas gifts for children who have lost a parent.  If you want to help or know of any teens that need service hours please call Amanda the Panda.  Ask to volunteer for the “Cheer Box Program”.

 

v     St Rita Project – Catholic Charities Adoption Services is working with the Women’s Correctional Facility in Mitchellville to develop a temporary Foster Care program for baby’s born to mom while imprisoned.  They are looking for people interested in being temporary Foster Parents.

 

v     Salvation Army – Please contact Anne if you are interested in bell ringing for the Salvation Army at the Windsor Heights Hy-Vee, Dec 2nd and Dec 9th from 10 AM to 10 PM.  Groups to do bell ringing in 2 hour shifts.  

 

Next meeting:  Christmas Party, Wednesday, December 13th 6:30 PM @ Anne Dols’ home.  Med, Large & X-Large sweat suits & slipper socks will be collected for Polk Co. Victim Services.
