Angel
Tree
Angel
Tree is an annual outreach to families with children of prisoners. In the fall, Prison Ministries gives
prisoners an opportunity to sign up their children under 18 to receive
Christmas gifts. Prison Ministries then
enlists the help of area churches to provide these gifts to the children from
their incarcerated parent.
St.
Theresa Church has participated in Angel Tree for the last 10 years. Currently, we receive a listing of 75-80
names of children each fall. From this
list, Angel Tree tags are created with a child's name and personal
preference. Each child receives 2
gifts---one clothing item and one toy or game.
Gift suggestions and sizes are also included on the tag. The first Sunday of Advent, the tags are
hung on a tree near the altar and in the back of the church and parishioners
are invited to take a tag to purchase a gift, wrap it and bring it back the
following weekend and place on the altar.
The
gifts are checked to ensure that every child receives 2 gifts and are sorted
for delivery. Volunteers deliver the
gifts the following week to ensure that the gifts are received in plenty of
time for Christmas.
